Electric bikes are now an integral part of the Belgian landscape. Whether you're going to work, shopping or just enjoying a ride, the e-bike is everywhere. But what exactly are the rules? Do you need a driver's license? Is it compulsory to wear a helmet? And what about alcohol or using the telephone while riding? In this guide, we provide a clear and practical overview.
Do you need a driver's license for an electric bike?
For most electric bikes, no. A conventional electric bike (pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and motor power limited to 250 watts) is considered a "bicycle". You can therefore use it without a license.
It's a different story for speed pedelec (assistance up to 45 km/h):
- AM or B license required
- Minimum age: 16
- Compulsory license plate
- Compulsory liability insurance
In a nutshell:
- Classic E-bike → no permit
- Speed pedelec → same rules as a moped
Do you have to wear a helmet on an electric bike?
- Classic electric bike (≤ 25 km/h): no obligation
- Speed pedelec (45 km/h): mandatory helmet, complying with EN1078 standard and offering reinforced protection for the temples and back of the head.
Although helmets are not compulsory on conventional e-bikes, associations such as the Fietsersbond strongly recommend their use.
Are you allowed to drink alcohol on an electric bike?
The rules are identical to those for motorists:
- Maximum 0.5 ‰ alcohol in blood
- Novice drivers (less than 2 years' driving experience): maximum 0.2 ‰
- Exceeding the limit = heavy fines or loss of license

It depends on the bike:
