Problem: your bike's electric assistance stops or bugs
Solving problems on your electric bike
One of the most annoying problems is stopping the electric assistance. Does the electric assistance glitch? Or does it stop altogether? Follow the steps below:
- Check the display for error messages that may indicate a problem. If error codes or warnings appear, consult your electric bike manual or contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
- Check the battery. It's very simple, but always make sure your electric bike is sufficiently charged by checking the range displayed. If this isn't the problem, check that the battery is correctly connected to your electric bike. This can be checked by making sure the battery is securely in place. If you have any doubts, remove the battery from your bike and replace it.
- Check the cables. Make sure there is no visible damage, such as broken cables or loose connections. If you find any damage, you may need to consult a professional repairman. In the case of loose connections, you can sometimes repair them yourself.
- Check the front, rear or center motor. If the display doesn't show 0 at standstill, or if the rotation sensor isn't working properly, it may be the central motor. Central motor problems cannot be solved on your own. Please contact your bike manufacturer or dealer.
- Check the sensor: Electric bikes often have a speed sensor that regulates the electric assistance. Check that the sensor is correctly positioned and that no dirt or obstructions interfere with its operation. Clean the sensor if necessary and make sure it is correctly adjusted.
- Consult your manual. If you don't know what the solution is, or if you're not sure what you're doing, consult your electric bike's manual for specific instructions and troubleshooting solutions. The manual may contain useful information for solving common electric-assist problems. Do you have a backpack, or do you always carry the same bag to school or work? Leave the manual in your bag! Read the rest of this article to identify error codes by brand.
- Contact the manufacturer: If you have followed all the above steps and the problem persists, contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. They will be able to advise you and carry out any necessary repairs.
Remember that electrical systems can be complex, so if you don't feel comfortable carrying out these checks, it's always best to call in a professional. At Upway, we're always ready to help you with your electric bike problems. Have a question? Contact our support team.
Problems and solutions for Bosch electric bikes
Speed not shown on display
First check that the Bosch display (Intuvia) is correctly attached to the bracket. If this is not the case, the connector between the screen and the bracket may be worn. Replacing the screen support may solve the problem and enable the speed to be displayed correctly again.
Error 503 is displayed
Check the position of the speed sensor magnet. Our advice: adjust the position of the magnet if it is incorrectly positioned. In some cases, the speed sensor may be damaged and need to be replaced.
Lighting doesn't work
Usually, one of the lighting system's wires is not (properly) connected, or the cables are incorrectly connected. To remedy this, we recommend reconnecting the cables while consulting the manual.
Problems and solutions for Shimano electric bikes
The electric bike does not provide continuous assistance during pedaling
If you notice that the assistance of your Shimano electric bike is not constant during pedaling, this may be due to an incorrect position of the crankset. Remove the crankset and replace it correctly. This can improve assistance and ensure that your electric bike runs smoothly. If this is too complicated, have the bottom bracket repositioned by a professional.
Error messages W103, W106, W013 or E012 are displayed.
Restart the system and do not move the pedals until the system is fully operational. This means that you must not exert any pressure on the pedals when you switch on the system. Keep the pedals as neutral as possible.
Error message W011 is displayed
The problem may be related to a misaligned or missing magnet on the rear wheel (and sometimes on the disc). The message may also refer to a problem with the alignment of the speed sensor on the rear frame of the wheel. We advise you to contact the manufacturer, an authorized dealer or a qualified repairer in the event of a problem.
Error message W010 is displayed
If you receive this message, it is important to let the motor of your Bosch electric bike cool down. We advise you to deactivate the electric assistance and leave the motor at rest until the message disappears from the display. The system will then have returned to a normal temperature. If you need to continue riding, use the bike without electric assistance.
Problems and solutions for Yamaha electric bikes
Unable to change motor assistance level
If you are unable to change the assistance level on your Yamaha electric bike, this may be due to dust or dirt accumulating under the buttons on the display. Open the screen and clean the buttons to free them of dust. After cleaning, the display should work properly and you'll be able to adjust the assistance level to suit your needs.
Sensor alignment problems
Check the sensors on the bottom bracket and rear hub. Make sure they are clean and correctly positioned. Adjust them if they seem misaligned or jammed. If you need help, contact the seller, an authorized dealer or a qualified repairer.
Abnormal engine noise and vibration
Check that there are no loose parts in the transmission or motor housing of your Yamaha electric bicycle. Tighten them if necessary. Make sure the chain is sufficiently lubricated, as this can also help prevent or reduce abnormal noises.
Problems and solutions for Bafang electric bicycles
Error code 30 (system activates but does not assist)
A common cause of error code 30 on Bafang electric bikes is a poor connection in the wiring. Check all connections carefully and make sure that each wire is correctly connected. Sometimes a wire can be loose or dirty, which can affect the assistance. Make sure all connections are tight and clean. In most cases, this will solve the problem and the electric bike will work normally again.
Power sensor or pedal assist not working
First inspect the pedal support sensors for visible damage. In the event of damage, contact an authorized dealer or repairer. Also check that the sensors are correctly aligned (positioned) with the magnets. See manual for detailed calibration instructions.
Motor overheating
Use a lower assistance level on steep climbs to reduce the load on the engine. If the engine overheats during a ride, take a break and let it cool down before continuing.
Problems and solutions for electric bikes Giant
The Giant electric bike does not charge
Make sure the charging port is clean and free of dirt. You can also check that the charger is correctly connected to the bike's charging port and to the mains socket.
Smartphone application connection does not work
Restart both your smartphone and your electric bike. Activate Bluetooth on your smartphone and make sure it's within range of your electric bike Giant. Follow the app's step-by-step instructions to establish the connection.
Engine noise and vibration
Check that there are no loose parts in the transmission or motor housing. Tighten them if necessary. Make sure the chain is sufficiently lubricated, as this can also help reduce noise and vibration.
Avoid problems by maintaining your electric bike
In addition to the common problems mentioned above, it's also important to maintain your electric bike regularly to avoid problems. Maintenance plays an essential role in maintaining the performance and lifespan of your electric bike. A well-maintained electric bike will not only give you a smoother, more reliable riding experience, but can also extend the life of parts and avoid unnecessary repairs.
A reduction in battery life or range can, for example, be linked to squeaking or dragging brakes. Or to low tires pressure. That's why it's important to regularly check the pressure in tires and the brake pads. You should also take the time to clean your electric bike thoroughly and lubricate the chain. It's also advisable to have regular professional maintenance carried out by a certified electric bike mechanic. Want to know all about maintaining your electric bike?
