How do you replace the display on an electric bike?

Your e-bike’s display is actually the nerve center of your ride. It shows you your exact speed, remaining battery level, and the current assist mode. But what if this little screen stops working? Maybe your bike fell down the stairs, the screen was damaged by moisture, or you simply want to upgrade to a more modern version with Bluetooth and GPS.

Many cyclists think they have to immediately go to an expensive repair shop for a broken display. Good news: replacing an e-bike display is often a job you can do yourself, as long as you follow the right steps.

Key findings

  1. Compatibility is essential
  2. Always work with the power off (remove the battery)
  3. Take your time with the cables and connectors

Why replace the display on your e-bike?

There are several reasons to replace the display on your electric bike. Over time, a display can wear out due to extreme weather conditions or sustain physical damage after a fall.

In addition, many people choose to upgrade. For example, switching from a basic black-and-white LCD screen (such as an older Bosch Intuvia) to an advanced TFT color screen (such as the Kiox 300) with navigation and smartphone connectivity. If the buttons are no longer working properly, replacement is also a sensible option.

Keep compatibility in mind: it’s the most important step!

Before we get into the steps, there’s one golden rule: make sure you buy the right display. Unfortunately, e-bike displays aren’t one-size-fits-all.

Brand and engine

Interoperability between brands is virtually nonexistent. If you have a Bosch motor, you must use a Bosch display. The same applies to Shimano, Yamaha, Brose, and Bafang. Even within a single brand, not all models are compatible.

Communication Protocols (UART vs. CANBUS)

E-bikes use different communication protocols. Entry-level and mid-range models often use UART, which is simpler and more flexible. High-end models often use CANBUS, a more complex and closed system. Installing a non-original display on a CANBUS system can cause errors or damage.

Firmware

Even if the connector fits, the software must be compatible. Incorrect firmware can prevent the screen from working properly.

Always check the part number, connectors, and the manufacturer’s recommendations before purchasing.

What do you need?

  • An Allen wrench (2.5 mm or 3 mm) or a Phillips-head screwdriver
  • A wire cutter
  • Cable ties
  • Optional: dielectric grease
  • Antistatic gloves (optional but recommended)

Steps for replacing the screen

Step 1: Safety First

  • Turn off the bike completely
  • Remove the battery
  • Hold down the power button for a few seconds to shut down the system

Step 2: Document

Take photos of the current setup to make reassembly easier.

Step 3: Remove the old screen

  • Cut the cable ties
  • Carefully disconnect the cable (without twisting it)
  • Unscrew the bracket and the control
  • Remove the screen

Step 4: Install the new screen

  • Attach the mount to the handlebars
  • Tighten the screws (5 to 8 Nm maximum)
  • Install the command if necessary

Step 5: Connect the cables

  • If necessary, apply dielectric grease
  • Align the connectors properly
  • Plug it in without forcing it or twisting it
  • Secure the cables neatly

Step 6: Test

  • Reinstall the battery
  • Turn on the system
  • Check the display and functions
  • Give it a try

Common Problems

No power or assistance: Check the connections.

Incorrect data: This is likely a firmware issue.

If the problem persists, consult a professional.

Maintenance

  • Clean with a soft cloth
  • Use a protective film
  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • Prevent corrosion

Replacing the display on your e-bike is a fun and useful DIY project. You’ll save money and gain a better understanding of your bike.
