About the Cube brand

The German brand Cube is known for its excellent value for money. Although it has its roots in the world of MTB and competitive cycling, it has also established itself as a major player in the e-bike market.

Cube consistently uses high-end, technologically advanced components without charging exorbitant prices.

The connection between sportiness and urban use

Within Cube’s extensive electric bike lineup, the Touring Hybrid series serves as the perfect bridge between sporty touring bikes, such as the Kathmandu series, and comfortable city bikes, such as the Supreme Hybrid.

While the Kathmandu is often equipped with an open derailleur drivetrain suited for hilly terrain, the Touring Hybrid Comfort SLX is designed with a clear focus on ease of use and minimal maintenance for everyday riding. The term “Comfort” highlights a geometry that is more comfortable for the back and neck, while the designation “SLX” (Super Luxury) refers to high-end components, including a belt drive and a hub with integrated gears.

Technical Specifications in Practice

To understand why the Cube Touring Hybrid Comfort SLX performs so well, you need to take a closer look at its technology. These technical choices directly translate into a premium riding experience, whether on paved roads or trails.

Bosch Performance Line PX motor and Purion 200 display

At the heart of the system is the Bosch Performance Line PX mid-drive motor, capable of delivering an impressive maximum torque of 90 Nm. The system is controlled via the Bosch Purion 200, a compact color display combined with a handlebar-mounted control unit.

With the Bosch Smart System and the Bosch Flow app, you can install updates, record your rides, and customize the assistance levels.

In practice, this motor performs exceptionally well. From the moment you start pedaling, it delivers immediate yet natural assistance. With 90 Nm of torque, it makes it easy to tackle headwinds or steep climbs. During our test ride, we particularly appreciated how quiet it was, thanks to the use of internal gears made of synthetic material.

The Purion 200 display is clear and intuitive, although some users may find the buttons a bit small at first. A major advantage is the ability to use your smartphone as a navigation screen via the Flow app.

Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh Battery

Elegantly integrated into the down tube of the aluminum frame, the 800 Wh Bosch PowerTube battery is one of the highest-capacity batteries currently available on a standard e-bike. A full charge takes about 6.5 hours using the included charger.

With this battery, range anxiety is virtually a thing of the past. During our tests on flat terrain in Turbo mode, it was easy to exceed a range of 85 kilometers. In Eco or Tour mode, the actual range can reach between 150 and 200 kilometers on a single charge.

This feature makes the Touring Hybrid Comfort SLX an excellent choice for commuters who don’t want to recharge their bike every day. The only minor drawback is removing and reinserting the battery: because it’s so discreetly integrated into the frame and weighs about 4 kg, it takes a little practice.

Gates CDX belt drive and Shimano Nexus 5 hub

Belt drive

The SLX replaces the traditional chain with a Gates CDX Carbon Drive belt drive paired with a 5-speed Shimano Nexus hub.

This is one of the key factors contributing to the bike’s comfort and ease of use. The belt runs quietly and requires no lubrication. The Shimano Nexus 5 hub has been specially designed to withstand the high stresses placed on it by powerful electric motors.

Shifting is smooth and precise thanks to the twist grip mounted on the handlebars. However, it takes some getting used to the relatively large gap between certain gears. Since only five gears cover a wide range of riding conditions, the shift from fourth to fifth gear is quite noticeable. Cyclists accustomed to a derailleur drivetrain with more gears will need to adjust. In practice, the powerful motor more than compensates for this characteristic thanks to its high torque.

Frame, comfort, and weight distribution

Frame

The bike features a Superlite aluminum frame with Cube's proprietary Efficient Comfort Geometry.

Suspension is provided by an SR Suntour air-sprung front fork with 100 mm of travel and a suspension seatpost. The wide tires Motion Big Apple tires (55-622 mm) offer excellent protection against punctures.
The total weight of the bike is approximately 30.5 kg.

From the very first few miles, the Touring Hybrid’s remarkable stability is immediately apparent. Thanks to the engine’s central position and the battery’s low placement, the center of gravity is perfectly balanced. The bike remains precise and predictable in turns as well as at high speeds.

The driving position is pleasantly upright and offers excellent visibility in city traffic. The front suspension effectively absorbs speed bumps and cobblestone roads.

However, the stock suspension and saddle may feel a bit firm for some riders. The handlebars, which are particularly wide at 700 mm, provide excellent control but can sometimes make maneuvering in tight spaces difficult.

The bike’s 30.5-kg weight is noticeable when you have to lift it onto a bike rack, but once you’re moving, the electric assist makes it practically unnoticeable.

Braking, safety, and finish

Braking is handled by Shimano BR-MT200 hydraulic disc brakes with 180-mm rotors at both the front and rear.

The lighting system includes a 60-lux Acid PRO-E headlight and an innovative taillight integrated into the rear fender that also serves as a brake light. The rack uses Cube’s SIC 2.0 system.
Safety is one of this model’s key strengths. The hydraulic brakes deliver remarkable stopping power and allow for quick stops with minimal effort. The built-in brake light is a real safety feature, especially in the dark: it brightens as soon as the brakes are applied to warn drivers behind.

The finish is excellent, thanks in particular to the carefully polished welds. However, experience shows that the paint can be relatively susceptible to scratches during heavy use.

Conclusion

The Cube Touring Hybrid Comfort SLX fully lives up to its promise as a high-end, versatile e-bike.

Cube has successfully designed an e-bike that stands out for its impressive power and exceptional range, thanks to the Bosch Smart System paired with an 800 Wh battery. The combination of the maintenance-free Gates belt drive and the Shimano Nexus 5 hub makes this model the ideal companion for those looking for a bike that’s easy to use every day.

Admittedly, its heavy weight and the relatively wide gaps between the five gears could be seen as weaknesses. However, these criticisms pale in comparison to its driving dynamics, remarkably quiet engine, and exemplary stability.

With a launch price of €3,299, Cube offers a level of features and performance for which many competitors charge several hundred euros more.
