The Bosch Purion display won't turn on: causes and solutions
You’re ready for a nice bike ride—the sun is shining and your e-bike’s battery is fully charged. But then a frustrating problem arises: you press the power button on your Bosch Purion display… and the screen stays completely black. The motor provides no assistance, and your e-bike suddenly turns into a regular bike—heavy and hard to pedal. Sometimes, the display even turns off in the middle of a ride.
If this happens to you, there’s no need to panic right away. A Bosch Purion display that won’t turn on is a common problem, and in many cases, you can easily fix it yourself. In this article, we’ll go over the possible causes and the most effective solutions, ranging from a simple battery replacement to having it serviced by a specialist.

Key findings
- Dead button batteries are the most common cause
- Starting the engine using the main battery is often possible (emergency start)
- If nothing works: a professional diagnosis is necessary
Reason 1: Empty or incorrect button batteries in the display
The solution
- Make sure to observe the polarity: place the two CR2016 batteries on top of each other, with the positive (+) side facing up. Then close the battery compartment (using a coin if necessary).
- Choose a reliable brand: low-quality or unbranded batteries can cause problems quickly. High-quality batteries (such as Maxell) are recommended.
- Ignore an error in the manual: some Bosch manuals list 1.5-volt batteries, but this is incorrect. CR2016 batteries are always 3 volts.
- Check the voltage: Test the batteries with a voltmeter before installation to avoid using new but dead batteries.
On-the-go solution: “emergency startup”
- If using a PowerPack battery: press the test/power button near the LEDs. If the lights come on, the system will usually start up.
- If your bike has a PowerTube battery: look for the power button built into the frame (it’s often inconspicuous). Pressing it may restart the system.
Reason 2: Poor connections or faulty contacts
The solution
- Check the battery: make sure it is properly seated
- Check the connections: inspect the cable at the display
- USB charging: Use the micro-USB port (5V, max. 600 mA) to charge the display (up to 3 hours). Be sure to replace the cap afterward
Cause 3: Damaged cable or faulty solder joint
The solution
- Check for creases, scuffs, or damage
- Check to see if it's caught in the frame
- Check the connections to the motor (for signs of corrosion, such as a greenish tint)
Cause 4: Faulty display or motor controller
The solution
- Test or replace: replace the Purion display or opt for a newer Bosch model (Intuvia, Kiox)
- Diagnostics at a dealership: A Bosch specialist can read error codes and perform a software update
