Why choose a Bosch central motor?

On an electric bike equipped with a mid-drive motor, the motor is located in the center of the bike, directly at the bottom bracket. This design offers many advantages over motors located in the front or rear wheel front or rear. Because the motor is positioned low and in the center, the bike's center of gravity is very low. This ensures optimal weight distribution, excellent handling, and great stability on the road.

In addition, the position near the crankset ensures very direct power transmission. The motor immediately supports your own pedaling effort, providing a natural and smooth riding experience. There is also relatively little energy loss, which often results in a longer range than with a comparable electric bike equipped with another type of motor. Over the years, this system has proven to be extremely reliable and robust.

You don't always need the most powerful engine

Many people think that you should always choose the most powerful motor, but this is a myth. A more powerful motor is often more expensive and unnecessary if you drive 99% of the time in a flat urban environment. Motor power, expressed in Newton-meter (Nm), determines how quickly you can accelerate and how easily you can climb a steep hill, but not the maximum speed of the bike (which is limited to 25 km/h for standard electric bikes). It is therefore important to choose a motor that is suited to the environment in which you ride.

What Bosch mid-drive motors are available?

Bosch has divided its range into several series, each tailored to a specific type of cyclist:

  • Bosch Active Line (40 Nm): This is the ideal "standard" motor for electric city bikes. Weighing just 2.9 kg, it is very light and extremely quiet. It offers smooth and harmonious assistance of up to 250% of your own pedaling power and is ideal for flat journeys in and around the city.

  • Bosch Active Line Plus (50 Nm): The big brother of the Active Line offers a little more power. This motor is perfect for both city and country riding, ideal for commuting and recreational rides. Thanks to a dynamic mode, you can start off more easily at traffic lights, for example.

  • Bosch Performance Line (65–75 Nm): Specially designed for sporty cyclists or commuters who want more power, for example in hilly areas. The assistance responds more dynamically and directly to your pedaling effort. Combined with the Smart System, this motor can achieve up to 75 Nm of torque.

  • Bosch Performance Line SX (55–60 Nm): The newest and most compact member of the family. Weighing just 2 kg, it is the lightest Bosch motor, specially designed for lightweight e-bikes and sporty cyclists who pedal at a high cadence.

  • Bosch Performance Line CX (85–100 Nm): The true powerhouse of the range, specially developed forMTB high-end hybrid bikes. With torque of up to 100 Nm (Gen 5), you can effortlessly climb even the steepest slopes. The motor is equipped with intelligent E-MTB software that automatically adjusts the assistance between 120% and 400% depending on the terrain.

  • Bosch Performance Line PX (90 Nm): A motor designed for adventurous cyclists and long-distance riders. It delivers 90 Nm of power for mountainous regions, while being quieter than the CX variants. It also offers an intelligent "auto" mode that dynamically adjusts the assistance depending on headwinds or inclines.

  • Bosch Cargo Line (85–100 Nm): Developed for heavy loads. If you use an electric cargo bike or a longtail loaded with children or goods, this motor allows you to start easily even from a standstill.

  • Bosch Performance Line Speed (85 Nm): While other motors stop at 25 km/h, this one is specially designed for speed pedelecs, offering assistance up to 45 km/h. Ideal for fast commutes over long distances.

The innovative Bosch Smart System (BES3)

Since 2022, Bosch has been equipping many engines with its Smart System (also known as BES3). In this intelligent system, the battery, motor, display, and control unit are directly connected to your smartphone via the Bosch eBike Flow app.

This offers many possibilities: you can update your bike remotely (over-the-air), automatically record your rides for sports analysis, and even precisely customize the different assistance levels to perfectly match your riding style.

High-quality batteries and screens

A Bosch mid-drive motor works perfectly with Bosch's secure lithium-ion batteries. Depending on your bike's design, you can choose between a PowerPack (mounted on the frame or on the luggage rack) or a PowerTube (fully integrated into the frame). Battery capacity ranges from 300 Wh to 800 Wh, and on some models, such as cargo bikes or speed pedelecs, a DualBattery system is even possible for very long distances.

When it comes to controls, Bosch also offers several displays selected by bicycle manufacturers:

  • Purion / Purion 200: Compact and easy to use with your thumb, attached directly to the handlebars.

  • Intuvia / Intuvia 100: A removable, easy-to-read central display that gives you gear shift advice so you always ride in the right gear.

  • Kiox 300/500: A sportier, higher-end color display, ideal for navigation and viewing fitness data such as power or pedaling cadence.

  • SmartphoneGrip: Turns your smartphone into an electric bike display while wirelessly charging it as you ride.
