Testing the Gazelle Orange E-bike

The Gazelle Orange C7 isn't a bike you fall in love with because it surprises you. It's a bike you forget about after three days, and I mean that in the best possible way. You get on it, you pedal, you arrive. Without thinking about it, because there's simply nothing (or almost nothing) to complain about.

This also explains why this model has hardly changed over the years. You don't reinvent something that works perfectly just because a new trend appears in the world of electric bikes. In 2024, the C7+/C8 versions did receive an update, but it was nothing revolutionary: just a few logical adjustments.

Find out below why this sturdy e-bike occupies a strong position in the mid-range segment.

Gazelle Orange E-bike

Key findings

  1. Low-maintenance setup: Bosch Active Line Plus + Shimano Nexus hub + closed chain guard = ride without your bike becoming a maintenance project.
  2. Refurbished = same base, easier on the budget: same engine, same frame, several hundred euros less, and the first wear parts already checked during new.

What a week-long trial reveals

I rode it for a whole week. Commuting to work. Running errands. And a longer trip to Amersfoort.

What struck me from day one was what didn't happen. No jolt when starting the engine. No unpleasant rattling when changing gears. No moment when the bike makes you feel like, "watch out now."

The Shimano Nexus hub allows you to downshift while stationary, for example at a red light. It's not a spectacular feature, but it's exactly the kind of practical detail you use twenty times a week.

As for the Bosch Active Line Plus motor, it does its job discreetly: quiet, progressive, perfectly proportioned to your own effort. After three days, it's no longer an assist. It's simply how a bike should always behave.
Why is there so little hassle with this e-bike?

The hub drive is protected from rain, sand, and everything else that a Dutch winter can throw at you. The result: no rust, fewer adjustments.

The closed chain guard performs the same role for the chain: protection, insulation, and increased longevity.
Compare that to an electric bike with derailleur gears: great if you like fine mechanics, but after a few wet seasons, you end up with a mess of cables that squeak like an old supermarket cart, followed by a repair bill.

Comfort: yes. Saddle: so-so.

During a longer outing, two things stood out.

The positive: The combination of suspension fork and suspension seat post really works. On uneven trails or rough asphalt, the bike remains stable. Your wrists and lower back are not subjected to shocks.

The worst: The saddle. Quite wide, but a little too firm for long distances. After 90 minutes, you understand why this point comes up often in user reviews.

This is not a deal breaker. It is simply something to plan for: invest in an ergonomic saddle immediately. Problem solved.

Gazelle and autonomy

Gazelle claims a range of up to 115 km. This is the famous "laboratory range ": eco mode, light rider, no wind, flat terrain, ideal conditions.

In practice, you can expect "several days of normal use" rather than "one stage of the Tour in one go." And this applies to almost all brands.
Most important: the couple.

The Active Line Plus motor delivers 50 Nm. That's more than enough for the Netherlands: headwinds, bridges, child seats, shopping bags—no problem.

However, if you regularly ride with a heavy load (heavy boxes, steep hills, constant wind), a Bosch Performance Line motor (approx. 65 Nm) will be more suitable.

Another detail rarely mentioned in brochures: the Bosch Active Line Plus motor is used in dozens of models from dozens of brands. Reliable? Yes. Exclusive? No.

The Orange C7 doesn't score points thanks to a "unique engine," but rather thanks to the way Gazelle has built the whole thing:

  • hydroformed aluminum frame with long warranty
  • internal wiring (neater and better protected)
  • MIK luggage rack (clip-on accessories, very practical if you change often)

Who is it for? And who is it not for?

This bike is designed for those who see an e-bike as a tool. Not as a hobby.

You want to:

  • travel comfortably around town
  • without complications
  • with a bike that will still look great in five years
  • and limit visits to the bike shop as much as possible

One critical point, however: The seven speeds are technically present. In practice, in the city, you mainly use second or third gear. The higher gears are often unused during urban driving.

A problem? No. But if you plan to make intensive use of the seven speeds, this probably won't be the case.

Why choose refurbished?

A refurbished Orange C7 refurbished 2022/2023 (often with 9,000–10,000 km) is not "worn out." On the contrary, this configuration shows little critical wear: internal hub, Bosch motor, sturdy frame—everything generally remains in very good condition.

Things to check when purchasing:

  • battery status and capacity
  • condition of the suspension (fork and seat post)
  • maintenance history

The main value lies in the fact that you invest less in a bike designed to make your life easier.

Final verdict

I've ridden more impressive e-bikes. Faster. More powerful. Lighter. With more technology to talk about at dinner (even if no one really asks).

But if you ask me which electric bike I would recommend to someone who just wants to ride every day without any surprises to work, to the supermarket, in the rain, and in a hurry, I would point to this Gazelle.

FAQ

Is the Gazelle Orange suitable if you want low maintenance?

Yes. That's precisely where it excels: internal hub + closed chain guard + reliable components. Expect annual maintenance under normal use.

What is the battery life?

Bosch batteries last several years under normal use. Longevity depends on charging, storage, and usage. When purchasing refurbished batteries, always check the actual condition of the battery and be realistic about its range.

What is the difference between C7(+) and C8?

The C8 mainly adds disc brakes (which perform better in the rain) and an extra gear. The Disc Belt version also adds a Gates belt for reduced maintenance.

Is refurbished a good choice for this model?

Yes, especially for this one. The key components show little wear and tear. Be sure to check the battery and suspension: these are the parts that show the most signs of age.
