Merida and the Reacto 5000

The Merida brand

The Taiwanese brand Merida Bikes has been a giant in the cycling world for decades. While the brand was once best known for its excellent value as a contract manufacturer for other companies, it has transformed itself into an innovative pioneer in the professional peloton.

Thanks to years of sponsoring UCI WorldTour teams such as Team Bahrain Victorious, feedback from professional riders has been directly incorporated into bikes designed for the general public. The frames are designed and developed in Germany, then manufactured in Taiwan using the most advanced production techniques.

The Reacto Family

Within Merida's road bike lineup, three key models stand out:

  • The Scultura: a lightweight, versatile climbing bike.
  • The Scultura Endurance: a comfort-oriented bike for long distances.
  • The Reacto: an uncompromisingly aerodynamic machine designed for pure speed.

The Reacto 5000 plays a key role in the Reacto lineup. While the “Team” versions use the much lighter and more expensive CF5 carbon, the 5000 features the exact same aerodynamic tube shapes and geometry thanks to the CF3 carbon platform.

It also serves as the entry point to electronic shifting in the Aero line, positioned just below the Reacto 6000 and 7000 models. With this model, Merida is targeting competitive cyclists, triathletes, and cycling enthusiasts who want to enjoy the aerodynamic benefits of professional-level bikes while staying within a realistic budget.

Technical specifications

Merida Reacto 5000

With the latest generation of the Reacto, Merida has focused on eliminating the traditional drawbacks of aero bikes: a frame that’s too heavy and a ride that’s too stiff and uncomfortable.

CF3 Carbon Frame and Aerodynamics

For the Reacto CF3 V carbon frame (approximately 1,185 grams in size M), Merida uses Nano Matrix Carbon technology.

The epoxy resin is infused with nanoparticles, increasing the frame’s impact resistance by 40% and creating an extremely strong structure. The tube profiles utilize the renowned NACA Fastback shapes: teardrop-shaped tubes with a flattened rear section. This reduces turbulence behind the tubes without adding unnecessary material—and thus weight.

The integration goes a long way: the seat tube is fully integrated into the top tube, and the transition between the fork and the down tube is perfectly smooth so as not to disrupt airflow.

Shimano 105 Di2 2x12

One of the Reacto 5000’s standout features is the Shimano 105 Di2 (R7100) groupset.

This semi-wireless electronic system brings the performance of Dura-Ace and Ultegra to a wider audience. Up front, it features a mid-compact crankset with 52-36-tooth chainrings. At the rear, a 12-speed 11-34T cassette (or sometimes 11-30T, depending on the series) offers a very wide range of gear ratios.

Di2 motors shift the chain with surgical precision and speed. Manual adjustment of the front derailleur is a thing of the past: the system automatically adjusts the position to prevent any friction.

Cockpit and cable management

The Reacto 5000 features the FSA SMR ACR stem paired with the Merida Expert CW handlebar.

Although it isn’t a one-piece carbon cockpit, this system offers all the aerodynamic benefits. The cables run directly under the handlebars, through the stem, and then into the frame via the headset.

The result: a clean, minimalist look and a few precious watts saved. Plus, this two-part system retains the practical advantage of allowing you to easily adjust the stem length or handlebar width during a bike fitting.

Brakes and Disc Cooler Technology

Braking is handled by Shimano 105 hydraulic disc brakes with 160-mm Shimano RT64 rotors on both the front and rear.

A technical feature unique to Merida is the Disc Cooler: a CNC-machined aluminum component located beneath the front and rear brake calipers. Thanks to its cooling fins, this system dissipates heat up to 35% faster during long, intense descents.

This prevents fading—the loss of braking power—and ensures consistent, predictable performance.

Wheels and tires clearance

The Reacto 5000 comes standard with Vision Team 35 Clincher Disc wheels.

These 35mm-profile aluminum wheels offer an excellent balance between aerodynamics and crosswind resistance. A major improvement in this new generation is the increased tires clearance.

While older aero frames were often limited to 25 mm tires , the current CF3 frame accommodates tires 700x32C. The bike comes equipped with fast 28 mm or 30 mm tires , which directly contribute to lower rolling resistance and significantly greater comfort.

S-Flex Seatpost

Aero bikes are often considered harsh on rough surfaces because of their deep, stiff carbon frames.

Merida solves this problem with the Merida Expert CW Aero S-Flex carbon seatpost. It features a strategically placed cutout filled with an elastomer insert, allowing the seatpost to flex slightly over bumps without compromising the frame’s lateral stiffness.

The seatpost also features a taillight that is discreetly integrated into the design.

On-the-road experience: the Reacto 5000 in action

As soon as you hop on the Reacto 5000, you can tell it’s a true racing bike.
With its sporty stack-to-reach ratio, the bike encourages a low, aerodynamic riding position. Thanks to its 73.5° seat tube angle, you sit directly over the bottom bracket, which naturally encourages you to ride hard.

The Reacto 5000 truly shines on long, open roads exposed to the wind. Once you exceed 30 km/h, you immediately feel how efficiently the frame cuts through the air.

Maintaining a high cruising speed—between 35 and 40 km/h—clearly requires less effort than on a traditional all-purpose bike. The stiffness around the BB86.5 bottom bracket and rear chainstays is impressive. Every turn of the Shimano 105 crankset is immediately converted into speed.
Some road bikes handle like cargo ships in corners because of their long wheelbases and massive frames. Merida has avoided this with the Reacto.

In a series of tight turns, the Reacto 5000 leans from side to side with remarkable intuitiveness. Thanks to its tapered carbon fork, the front end feels stiff and extremely precise. You can choose your line with precision and hold it, even on rough surfaces.
The biggest surprise during the test drive is the comfort. Those expecting to ride on a “flying board” will be surprised.

Thanks to the combination of the S-Flex seatpost and 28/30 mm tires , minor vibrations are effectively dampened. Of course, this is still a stiff racing frame, but it’s comfortable enough to handle 4- to 5-hour rides without significant back or neck pain.

Weighing in at around 9 kg depending on the size, the Reacto 5000 isn’t a pure climber. When the gradients get very steep, you can tell you’re carrying more weight than you would on a Scultura.
Fortunately, the Shimano 105 Di2 makes up for this with its small 34-tooth chainring, which helps maintain a smooth cadence. As soon as you reach the summit and the descent begins, the extra weight almost becomes an advantage.

The Reacto 5000 accelerates like a rocket. Its aerodynamics allow it to reach high speeds quickly, while its stable wheelbase and Disc Coolers inspire complete confidence in fast corners.

Critical points

No bike is perfect, and while the Merida Reacto 5000 is truly impressive, there are two areas that could be improved.

The Vision Team 35 wheels are reliable, stiff, and very sturdy, but they are relatively heavy. They keep the bike’s total weight around 9 kg. Replacing these wheels with a lightweight 45- or 50-mm aero carbon set would completely transform the bike into a true rocket while significantly reducing its weight.

The second point concerns cockpit adjustment. Although the FSA SMR system is more flexible than a one-piece cockpit, the internal routing of cables through the stem makes maintenance or significant changes to the cockpit height more time-consuming and complicated.

Conclusion

The Merida Reacto 5000 proves that a top-tier aerodynamic experience doesn't have to cost a fortune.

The Merida strikes an excellent balance between raw speed, precise handling, and surprising comfort. Thanks to the CF3 carbon frame, you get the same aerodynamic performance as the pros, while the Shimano 105 Di2 2x12 delivers top-tier electronic shifting.

Even though the stock Vision aluminum wheels are a bit heavy, they provide a solid foundation that makes it easy to plan for future upgrades.
