Stella Vicenza Review: Which of the Five Is the Best Choice?

A name can promise a lot. Vicenza. It evokes a city where you park your bike in a piazza, order a cappuccino, and let the sun do the rest. Stella didn’t choose this name at random. There’s aspiration, there’s elegance. But a bike isn’t a marketing campaign. And the Stella Vicenza is certainly not a single model: it is, as is often the case, a family. A family whose members sometimes differ more than one might think. I’ve analyzed the entire lineup, from the simple Superior FDST to the more sophisticated Pro MDS FI. Want to know more? Read on.

Stella Vicenza

Key findings

  1. The Premium MDS-N8 FI (Shimano E5000, internal-gear hub, built-in battery) is the best all-around choice for most everyday riders.
  2. The Pro MDS FI stands out with its 60 Nm of torque, Gates CDX belt, and Nexus 5E hub—perfect for those looking for more advanced technology without wanting a sports bike.
  3. The brand's history matters: Stella went bankrupt in November 2024 and reopened in March 2025 with a smaller network. With a refurbished Vicenza, you're covered by the Upway warranty, which is independent of this situation.

One name, a wide variety of models

By 2026, the Vicenza line will include five distinct models. This may seem like a lot of choice, but it’s also a trap: the name “Vicenza” says almost nothing about the actual bike.

The simplest model, the Superior FDST, uses a Stella Eleon front motor (42 Nm) with a rotation sensor. The top-of-the-line model, the Pro MDS FI, features a Shimano E6100 mid-drive motor (60 Nm) with a torque sensor and a Gates belt. These are two completely different bikes sharing the same name.

The key differences lie in:

  • the engine's position (front or mid),
  • the type of sensor (rotation or torque),
  • the drive system (chain or belt).

These three factors largely determine the driving experience.

In my opinion, Stella doesn't clearly distinguish between the different models in the Vicenza lineup. Buyers really need to do their homework, especially when it comes to refurbished used cars.

The model that best suits most people remains the Premium MDS-N8 FI, which was already named “Best Buy” in 2024.

Handling

I tested a refurbished Vicenza Premium MDS-N8 FI refurbished 2023) for a week.
Verdict: It does exactly what you’d expect, without any fuss.

The Shimano E5000 motor is quiet and smooth. It’s not particularly sporty, but it’s very stable. The hub drive is simple and requires little maintenance. The built-in battery is sleek.

Cons: The seat is a bit hard, and the suspension is slightly stiff.

The Pro MDS FI is in a league of its own. Its E6100 motor (60 Nm) delivers more power. Add the Gates belt (grease-free and virtually maintenance-free), and you get a very sturdy bike. In my opinion, this is the most refined Vicenza model—provided its refurbished price refurbished justified.

The Superior FDST is reliable and practical, making it ideal for flat city riding. But on hills or when riding into the wind, its limitations quickly become apparent.

What to Check When Buying refurbished Items

At Upway, the bike has already been inspected, but it’s helpful to know what to check:

  • The exact model and year
  • Battery status and capacity
  • Drivetrain wear (especially on derailleur models)
  • Belt tension (Pro MDS FI)

The FDST may be a good, affordable option for flat urban riding, but not for demanding rides.

The Stella Context: One Brand, Two Realities

On November 8, 2024, Stella filed for bankruptcy. On March 1, 2025, the brand relaunched its operations with a smaller network (12 stores instead of 48).

This doesn't call the bike's quality into question, but it changes the context:

  • more limited service network
  • limited availability of parts

Good news: Bosch and Shimano systems can be serviced independently of the Stella network. However, Stella Eleon (FDST) motors are more dependent on the brand.

When you buy a refurbished bike refurbished Upway, you get an independent warranty, which gives you peace of mind.
