VanMoof S3: Ingenious or Annoying?

The VanMoof S3 is the bike that had people lining up outside stores. This model was unlike anything else: sleeker, quieter, smarter. A bike that made it feel like urban mobility had just been reinvented. I understand its appeal. You see it and think: this isn’t just an electric bike—it’s a statement.

The battery is built into the frame. The lights are built into the frame. The display is built into the frame. Even the lock is built into the frame. VanMoof has hidden everything that usually identifies a bike as such. What remains is minimalism at its finest.

VanMoof S3

Key findings

  1. The VanMoof S3 is more comfortable than its minimalist design suggests: it has a quiet motor, good battery life, and is a pleasure to ride in the city.
  2. The automatic gear system is its most well-known weakness. VanMoof acknowledges this itself. The official solution is the AutoHub conversion from 4-speed to 2-speed.
  3. When it comes to refurbished products, it all comes down to one question: Is this specific unit in good working order and up to date with the software?

A bike that takes itself seriously

The S3 offers a surprising riding experience. You might expect a designer bike that prioritizes style over performance, but that’s not the case. It’s quiet, comfortable on paved city streets, and accelerates easily thanks to the boost button on the handlebars. BikeRadar describes the ride as particularly smooth; TechRadar and the ANWB also give it positive reviews for everyday use.

The front-wheel motor feels different from a mid-motor: it creates a slight pull on the handlebars, which some people find unnatural. Personally, you get used to it quickly. This fits the S3’s style: direct, efficient, and no-nonsense.

The 504 Wh battery was impressive for this category when it was released. The ANWB measured a range of between 52 and 63 km in high-assist mode, while BikeRadar recorded nearly 130 km under ideal conditions. Range varies significantly depending on wind conditions, weight, and assist level, but the S3 still performs well in this regard.

Automatic transmissions: ingenious or annoying?

This is where the main weakness lies. The 4-speed automatic transmission (e-shifter) has been criticized in nearly every serious review. I personally find it mediocre, with occasional slipping. VanMoof acknowledges issues such as slipping, noises (“pops”), and error 44.

The chosen solution speaks volumes: simplicity over complexity. The AutoHub conversion replaces the 4-speed transmission with a 2-speed system. That says it all.

When buying a refurbished bike, this is the key point: does the bike still use the original system, or has it been converted? Personally, I would only consider a model that has already been converted or includes this conversion.

After bankruptcy: What is its value today?

VanMoof went bankrupt in July 2023. For users, this was no small matter: the S3 is a “system” bike. The motor, battery, lock, lights, and display all rely on the software, the app, and the service network.

By 2026, the situation is more nuanced. McLaren Applied / Lavoie has acquired the brand, resumed production of parts for the S3 and X3 models, made the technical documentation available (VanMoof Archives), and rebuilt a service network. Firmware updates are still being released.

But one thing remains clear: the S3 is still an ecosystem bike. It requires more attention than a traditional bike like a Gazelle or Batavus. It doesn’t necessarily break down more often, but you’re more reliant on quality service if a problem arises. Always check to see if there’s an authorized service center in your area.

Who refurbished interested in the refurbished VanMoof S3?

The S3 is best suited for everyday urban use, where access to a power outlet is available (non-removable battery), and for those who appreciate its design and built-in features. It’s more of a technological platform than just a utility bike.

Kick Lock, the alarm, and the built-in tracking system aren't just gimmicks. In the city, they offer a real advantage over a bike that's been retrofitted.

Less suitable for: hilly terrain, users looking for a universal repair solution, or those who want to avoid any reliance on software.

Upway the refurbished S3. This ensures a basic technical inspection. However, there is one key feature to check: the AutoHub conversion. With this, you get an excellent city bike at a fair price.

FAQ

Can you still get a VanMoof serviced?

Yes. Following the acquisition by McLaren Applied / Lavoie, a service network has been reestablished and parts production has resumed. Check to see if there is an authorized service center near you.

What is AutoHub conversion?

It replaces the 4-speed automatic system with a simpler 2-speed system, reducing shifting issues and error 44. This is VanMoof’s official solution.

What is the battery life of the VanMoof S3?

60 to 150 km, according to the manufacturer. In practice (ANWB): 52 km on high power mode and 63 km on medium power mode. Sufficient for daily commutes of up to 30 km.

Is the non-removable battery a problem?

It depends on where you live. If there’s an outlet near your bike (garage, basement), no problem. Without an accessible charging point, it becomes a hassle.
