The Best Used Road Bikes

By 2026, the market for used road bikes is no longer a niche market. Whereas a used road bike was once mainly a winter bike or a forgotten first passion, it is now a segment in its own right. Models that are five, seven, or sometimes even ten years old are still technically on par with the top-of-the-line models. Yesterday’s expensive models are today’s smart buys.

I’m often asked the same question: which used road bike should I buy without turning it into a DIY project? My answer starts with two criteria: has the model proven itself, and is it available in your size on the Dutch market? Below are six models I wholeheartedly recommend, based on their reputation, technical specs, and current availability. Three are aluminum, three are carbon, with a few nuances often missing from this type of selection.

Key findings

  1. Aluminum isn’t just a consolation prize. Models like the Cannondale CAAD12 and the Trek Émonda ALR offer a racing feel that many carbon bikes in the same price range simply can’t match.
  2. Availability is just as important as quality. The Giant Advanced and the Cannondale SuperSix EVO are available in almost every size and configuration. This makes them more appealing than competitors that are just as good but harder to find.
  3. The best option falls between 2016 and 2021: modern enough to feature disc brakes and tires , yet old enough to qualify for a significant discount.

Why buying used is the smartest choice today

The major frame models released between 2018 and 2022 are almost on par with current models in terms of performance. Disc brakes have been standard since 2017, and electronic drivetrains can be added later.

What has changed, however, is the price of new bikes. A basic bike equipped with Shimano Ultegra easily costs over €4,000. On the used market, you can find bikes from the same generation—or nearly so—for half, and sometimes a third, of the price.

A refurbished model also eliminates the main risk associated with used bikes: unpleasant surprises. The bike is inspected, wear-and-tear parts are replaced, and the drivetrain is perfectly adjusted.

The Three Best Aluminum Road Bikes

Aluminum is underrated. Not out of nostalgia, but because the models below prove that the material isn’t the deciding factor in how a bike performs.

Cannondale CAAD12

Cannondale CAAD12

In my opinion, this is currently the best used aluminum bike on the market. Cannondale combines the CAAD character—responsive, direct, and precise—with more vertical comfort than previous generations. The 2016–2019 models are ideal: modern and affordable. Watch out for play in the BB30a bottom bracket.

Trek Émonda ALR

Trek Émonda ALR

The smart choice. Lightweight, designed for climbing, with balanced geometry. Less twitchy than the Allez Sprint, more versatile than the CAAD12. An excellent choice for those who want to climb efficiently.

Specialized Allez Sprint

Specialized Allez Sprint

The most radical of the three. Integrated cables, maximum stiffness, and DNA inherited from the top-of-the-line Tarmac models. A specialist’s bike: perfect for sprints and criteriums, but demanding for casual riding.

The Three Best Carbon Road Bikes

If you're looking for carbon fiber, there's no need to go for the latest model. These three platforms still dominate the market by a wide margin.

Giant Giant TCR Advanced

Giant Advanced

Probably the best deal on a used carbon bike. Lightweight, efficient, and widely available. Check for the Variant seatpost and PressFit.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO

Cannondale SuperSix EVO

The sophisticated choice. Lightweight, aerodynamic, agile, and stable. Starting with the 2020 disc brake version, it’s completely modern. An excellent balance of performance and prestige.

Specialized Tarmac SL6

Specialized Tarmac SL6

A complete platform. FACT carbon, Rider-First construction, threaded bottom bracket, and tires 30 mm. Less common, but extremely versatile.

Outsiders, pitfalls, and points to watch out for

Two models deserve special mention.

Canyon Ultimate CF

Canyon Ultimate CF

An excellent contender. Aggressive geometry, carbon cockpit, great value for the price. But cockpit and drivetrain details have a bigger impact on compatibility. If you have the budget, check out the Canyon Endurace CF instead.

Cannondale CAAD10

Cannondale CAAD10

A cult classic. It’s always a pleasure to ride, but the CAAD12 is now the more logical choice for most people: it’s more modern and more comfortable.

Warning!

When buying secondhand, always check:

  • Play in the bottom bracket
  • The condition and maintenance of the transmission
  • Any microcracks in carbon frames

A refurbished bike helps you avoid these risks. That’s the difference between a good deal and a project.

FAQ

Is a used carbon road bike safe?

Yes, provided that the frame is carefully inspected (for dents, cracks, and gluing). If you're buying a used bike, have the frame checked by a professional.

Which vintage offers the best value for money?

Between 2018 and 2021. Modern, compatible with tires , with significant depreciation already factored in.

Aluminum or carbon?

Aluminum offers the best balance of feel and value, along with responsive handling. Carbon provides greater lightness, stiffness, and overall refinement.

How much should I budget?

Prices start at around €800 for a good aluminum bike and €1,500 for a high-end carbon bike. Prices that are too low often hide additional costs.
