Electric bike insurance 2025: what does it cover (and what doesn't)?

E-bikes are more expensive, and therefore more attractive to thieves, than conventional bicycles. So many people ask: should you insure your e-bike, and what exactly does this insurance cover?

Electric bike insurance generally covers theft, attempted theft, damage due to a fall or collision, vandalism and sometimes accessories or breakdown assistance. However, normal wear and tear and aging of the battery are not generally covered. For speed pedelecs, insurance is compulsory; for classic e-bikes, it is optional, but strongly recommended.

Why insure your electric bike?

An electric bike costs on average between €1,500 and €4,000 (2024-2025 market).
Loss or theft can therefore represent a significant cost. That's why more and more cyclists are opting for e-bike insurance, even if there's no legal obligation to do so.

Is e-bike insurance compulsory?

E-bike vs. speed pedelec
Type of bikeEngine powerMax. speedInsuranceLegal obligations
E-bike≤ 250 W25 km/hNoNo plate or helmet required
Speed pedelec> 250 W45 km/hYesPlate, helmet and insurance mandatory (BE & NL)

Classic e-bikes are not considered motorized vehicles, unlike speed pedelecs, which are treated like mopeds: they therefore require third-party insurance, a license plate and a helmet.

What insurance does not cover

What is not covered by bicycle insurance
Not coveredReason
Normal wearBrakes, tires, chain...
Battery ageingLoss of capacity = normal wear and tear
Insufficient safetyNo approved anti-theft device (e.g. ART), unlocked room
Careless drivingAlcohol, stunts, dangerous behavior
Commercial useDelivery / courier = specific contract required

Tip: in the Netherlands, use at least one ART-2 anti-theft device (some policies require two).

Battery ageing

A lithium-ion battery maintains its capacity for 500 to 800 charge cycles.
Progressive loss of autonomy is considered natural wear and tear, and is therefore neither guaranteed nor insured.

Practical tip: keep the battery test report (especially for reconditioned models), as some insurance companies may ask for it in the event of a claim.

How is the bonus calculated?

The main factors :

  • Bike purchase value
  • Age of bike
  • Place of residence (higher risk in cities)
  • Type of coverage (theft, damage, assistance)

Average premium: €80 to €300 / year

Please note: for older bikes, a depreciation charge applies - reimbursement is not always at new value.

How do I report a theft or claim?

Most insurers require :

  • A police report
  • Proof of purchase and warranty
  • Bike serial number
  • Proof of anti-theft device (certificate)
  • Photos of damage (if applicable)

Conclusion

E-bike insurance is not compulsory for standard electric bikes, but is highly recommended, given their value and the risk of theft. For speed pedelecs, it is legally compulsory. A refurbished bike with warranty and inspection report, likeUpway's, is fully insurable and offers additional peace of mind.

Steps to follow

  • Note and save the frame number
  • Keep proof of purchase and warranty in digital format
  • Check anti-theft requirements (NL: ART certification)
  • Compare insurers for theft, damage and assistance coverage
