Electric bikes: comfort and safety, the right reflexes

Riding an electric bike is relaxing and fast, but it requires different clothing and equipment than a conventional bike. By making the right choices, every ride becomes more enjoyable and safer.

When I first seriously rode an electric bike, I honestly thought to myself: pedaling is pedaling. That idea quickly disappeared. You ride faster, you sweat less, and yet I often felt cold. And in traffic, I sometimes felt more vulnerable than on my old city bike. It was only when I adapted my clothing and equipment that the electric bike became really comfortable. In this blog, I'll explain how I did it.

Key findings

  1. Electric bikes require different clothing than conventional bikes because of the wind and speed.
  2. The three-layer system is the basis for comfort in all seasons.
  3. Safety and visibility are as important as warmth.

How should I dress sensibly when riding an electric bike?

By working with layers. It sounds simple, but it really makes all the difference. The famous three-layer system helps you stay warm and dry without getting too hot.
Principle of clothing layers
LayerFunctionWhat should you watch out for?
Base coatKeep skin dryNo cotton, rather synthetic or merino wool
Intermediate layerRetains heatMust breathe, not too tight
Outer layerProtects from wind and rainWindproof and (slightly) waterproof

Why is the base layer so important?

Because damp skin cools down much faster. Even if you're barely sweating.
What I used to do: put on a regular T-shirt. Bad idea. Cotton retains moisture and gets cold.

Today, I always choose:

  • thermal underwear
  • or a synthetic cycling jersey
  • or merino wool

What exactly is the purpose of the middle layer?

It keeps you warm without making you sweat. This is particularly important when riding an electric bike.
Since the engine does some of the work, your body doesn't heat up as much. A fleece or softshell jacket is therefore ideal.

What works well for me:

  • not too tight
  • well ventilated
  • easy to remove when the temperature rises

How to choose a good outer layer to protect against wind and rain?

Look at waterproofing and wind protection, not just thickness. When riding an electric bike, wind is your main enemy. A good jacket effectively cuts through the wind at speed. For rain, the water column is important:
Water column – meaning
Water columnMeaning
0–999 mmSlightly water-repellent
5,000 – 14,999 mmWaterproof for everyday use
15,000+ mmFor heavy rain and long outings

For short trips around town, extreme waterproofing is often unnecessary. These jackets are less breathable and can feel damp.

Do you need special cycling pants?

No, but extra seating comfort is a good idea, especially for longer journeys. I didn't want to look like a cyclist. The solution? Cycling underwear. These are boxer shorts with a thin pad built in, to be worn under normal pants.

Advantages :

  • more comfort
  • no irritation
  • invisible under clothing

Why do my hands and feet get cold so quickly?

Because they catch a lot of wind and move less. This is particularly noticeable on electric bikes.

What really helps:

  • Gloves: better grip, warm and dry hands. In winter, preferably windproof and waterproof.
  • Socks and feet: merino wool or windproof socks. Overshoes in case of rain and cold weather.
  • Head and neck: hat under the helmet, ear muffs, and neck warmer or scarf. A lot of heat is lost through the head, which many people underestimate.

Is a helmet really necessary when riding an electric bike?

Bern helmet

Yes, absolutely. Because of the higher speed, the risk of injury is greater.

  • complies with standard EN 1078
  • also protects the temples and the back of the head
  • is comfortable, so that you will actually wear it

Did you fall? Replace your helmet, even if there is no visible damage.

How can you be highly visible?

By doing more than what the law requires. This brings peace of mind.

What I personally use:

  • a powerful front light (300–600 lumens)
  • USB rechargeable lighting
  • reflective elements on clothing or bags
  • a fluorescent vest or reflective backpack cover

What accessories make electric bikes easier to use?

  • Backpacks: no more sweaty backs and more space. Preferably waterproof.
  • Battery cover: keeps the battery warm and improves battery life in winter
  • Phone holder: safe navigation, both hands on the handlebars
  • Good locks: ideally a frame lock + a chain (ART certification or level 4)

What is the most important lesson regarding clothing for electric bikes?

You don't have to buy everything at once, but start with the essentials.

A good jacket, helmet, and effective lighting already make a huge difference. Poor-quality equipment may seem cheap, but often costs more frustration in the long run.

As they often say: there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. And honestly? It's true.
