Electric bikes: comfort and safety, the right reflexes
Riding an electric bike is relaxing and fast, but it requires different clothing and equipment than a conventional bike. By making the right choices, every ride becomes more enjoyable and safer.
When I first seriously rode an electric bike, I honestly thought to myself: pedaling is pedaling. That idea quickly disappeared. You ride faster, you sweat less, and yet I often felt cold. And in traffic, I sometimes felt more vulnerable than on my old city bike. It was only when I adapted my clothing and equipment that the electric bike became really comfortable. In this blog, I'll explain how I did it.

Key findings
- Electric bikes require different clothing than conventional bikes because of the wind and speed.
- The three-layer system is the basis for comfort in all seasons.
- Safety and visibility are as important as warmth.

How should I dress sensibly when riding an electric bike?
| Layer | Function | What should you watch out for? |
|---|---|---|
| Base coat | Keep skin dry | No cotton, rather synthetic or merino wool |
| Intermediate layer | Retains heat | Must breathe, not too tight |
| Outer layer | Protects from wind and rain | Windproof and (slightly) waterproof |
Why is the base layer so important?
- thermal underwear
- or a synthetic cycling jersey
- or merino wool
What exactly is the purpose of the middle layer?
- not too tight
- well ventilated
- easy to remove when the temperature rises
How to choose a good outer layer to protect against wind and rain?
| Water column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0–999 mm | Slightly water-repellent |
| 5,000 – 14,999 mm | Waterproof for everyday use |
| 15,000+ mm | For heavy rain and long outings |
Do you need special cycling pants?
- more comfort
- no irritation
- invisible under clothing
Why do my hands and feet get cold so quickly?
- Gloves: better grip, warm and dry hands. In winter, preferably windproof and waterproof.
- Socks and feet: merino wool or windproof socks. Overshoes in case of rain and cold weather.
- Head and neck: hat under the helmet, ear muffs, and neck warmer or scarf. A lot of heat is lost through the head, which many people underestimate.
Is a helmet really necessary when riding an electric bike?

- complies with standard EN 1078
- also protects the temples and the back of the head
- is comfortable, so that you will actually wear it
How can you be highly visible?
- a powerful front light (300–600 lumens)
- USB rechargeable lighting
- reflective elements on clothing or bags
- a fluorescent vest or reflective backpack cover
What accessories make electric bikes easier to use?
- Backpacks: no more sweaty backs and more space. Preferably waterproof.
- Battery cover: keeps the battery warm and improves battery life in winter
- Phone holder: safe navigation, both hands on the handlebars
- Good locks: ideally a frame lock + a chain (ART certification or level 4)
