Estimates.The valuesmarked as "estimates" area realistic ballpark figure, not an exact number. Adjust them based on your own bills, and the calculation will immediately become more accurate.
Price per kilometer as a consistency check.Nibud estimates approximately 62.5 cents per kilometer for a compact car, including depreciation, and 25.0 cents if only variable costs are considered. The ANWB arrives at approximately €0.52 per kilometer for an average car. The tax-exempt allowance of €0.25 per kilometer in the Netherlands is therefore well below these figures.
Electricity for your bike.A full charge of a 500 Wh battery costs approximately €0.13 to €0.18 at these rates. A year of daily commutes therefore generally costs a total of €5 to €30 in electricity.
Fixed or variable costs.If you keep the car, the insurance, tax, and vehicle inspection fees continue to apply. We therefore do not count these as savings. If you get rid of the car, we only charge you for fuel, maintenance, and tires based on the kilometers you actually travel by bike. That’s the conservative approach.
Belgium: TMC.The registration tax is paid only once when purchasing a car. We do not include it in our calculations because it has already been paid.
Belgium: Exemption Limit.For the 2026 tax year, we use €3,700 per year. Some sources cite €3,690. Above this amount, the bicycle allowance is no longer tax-exempt.
Electric Vehicles in Flanders.For a 100% electric car, the road tax in Flanders is €0. However, a minimum rate of €102.96 applies in certain cases.
