How much does your electric bike cost per year?

Indicate your use and the characteristics of your bike to estimate the annual cost. The result is an estimate based on average values.

What determines the annual cost?

The five fixed factors are :

  • Energy (kWh)
  • Maintenance
  • Depreciation
  • Insurance
  • Accessories / wear: most users underestimate the maintenance and wear of tires. According to bike shops in NL and BE, brake pads often wear out after 1,500-2,000 km.

Calculation: energy consumption

A typical 500 Wh (0.5 kWh) battery costs around €0.15 per charge at €0.30/kWh. With 100 full charge cycles per year, this works out at around €15/year.

Maintenance and wear

  • Chain + cassette: €40-80
  • Brake pads: €10-20
  • General service: €50-90

Total: €70-150 per year, depending on use and region.
Upway 's reconditioned electric bikes are technically checked and certified before sale, which generally reduces unexpected costs in the first year. Read more about maintenance costs in our guide.

Depreciation: new vs. refurbished

  • new electric bike: average depreciation of 15-25% per year (source: major retailers NL/BE).
  • refurbished 5-12% per year, as the greatest loss of value has already occurred.

Example: a refurbished electric bike at €1,200 → depreciation of around €100/year.

Insurance and additional costs

  • Theft insurance: €60-120/year
  • Extras: tires (€25-40), lighting (€10-30), anti-theft device (€20-50)

These amounts vary greatly from city to city; Brussels and Amsterdam apply higher premiums because of the risk of theft.
