What's the best electric bike for long distances?

Since I bought my first electric bike, a world of possibilities has opened up for me. Where before, after a long day's work or on vacation, I often took the car, I now increasingly choose to cycle, even when the distances are considerable. Recently, I cycled over 90 kilometers through hills and lakes, a journey I would never have dared attempt with my old bike.

What makes an electric bike ideal for long rides?

If you really want to enjoy long rides, the right e-bike changes everything. But a few points are essential:

1. Battery and autonomy

My first e-bike had a 400 Wh battery, and I quickly learned my lesson! On an outing with a lot of headwind, I broke down halfway through. Today, I trust a model equipped with a 625 Wh battery, which is much more reassuring. Especially if you're traveling with luggage or tackling hills, it's best to avoid the stress of an empty battery.

2. Motor and power

I much prefer a central motor. The bike is more stable and, especially on hilly terrain, the assistance is natural and pleasant: it doesn't do the work for you, but supports you effectively. My current bike is equipped with a Bosch Performance Line CX, with high torque, ideal for climbing.

3. Comfort

After several hours in the saddle, comfort becomes essential. A suspension fork is a real plus, as is a good seatpost and a frame adapted to your morphology. I always choose an ergonomic position, otherwise it's my wrists and back that suffer.

4. Speeds

Personally, I'm a fan of continuously variable gears, like those from Enviolo. Perfect for itineraries alternating climbs and flat sections.

Giant AnyTour E+ 2 GTS

Practical advice from my own experience

  • Always check tires pressure before setting off.
  • If possible, take a quick charger with you when you travel. During a lunch or coffee break, you can regain a few kilometers of autonomy.
  • Don't put all your weight in the back: distribute your luggage as evenly as possible.

What real autonomy can we expect?

It all depends on the battery, your weight, the terrain and the weather. With my current bike, in hilly terrain, I cover between 120 and 150 kilometers on a full charge. In "eco" mode, you can go even further, but with steep climbs and heavy panniers, range drops rapidly.

As you can see, for me, the long-distance electric bike is much more than just a means of transport. It's fun, freedom and adventure - as long as you choose the right model for your needs.
