Backpedaling and freewheeling: What's the difference?

The terms can be a bit confusing. Technically, an e-bike equipped with a coaster brake also has a freewheel: you can coast without the pedals turning. But as soon as you push the crank backward, the brake housed in the rear hub engages. In the marketplace, the term “freewheel electric bike” almost always means something else: this bike does not have a coaster brake. You brake both the front and rear wheels using levers on the handlebars.

This difference has more implications than it might seem. It affects how you position your pedals at a red light, how you slow down while reaching for the brakes, and the components you can choose for your bike. With a freewheel, you can freely return the crank to a good starting position. On the other hand, both of your service brakes are operated by hand.

On paper, both options are equally good. A bicycle—and therefore also a conventional e-bike—must have two brakes that operate independently of one another. On a back-pedal brake model, the hub brake typically controls the rear wheel, and a hand brake controls the front wheel. Models without back-pedal brakes have one lever per wheel.

Does backpedaling still make sense in the age of disc brakes?

From a purely technical standpoint, the answer is no for most e-bikes. Two hand brakes that offer precise control handle all standard braking tasks. Backtracking in Everyday Life

If you've been riding with a coaster brake for decades, you don't even think about it anymore. Just press backward, and the rear wheel slows down. On leisurely city rides, this feeling remains pleasantly familiar. Another practical advantage: when turning, you can reach out with one hand while slowing down with the pedals.

The problem arises the next time you start riding again. If the front pedal is in the wrong position after coming to a stop, you can’t move the crank all the way back: even a slight movement is enough to engage the brake. You then have to move the bike forward a little, lift the crank, or start from a less powerful position. On a conventional bike, this is annoying. On a heavier electric bike, it can significantly complicate a smooth start.

When braking, backpedaling is still a rear-wheel braking system. When you slow down sharply, your weight shifts forward and the rear wheel becomes lighter. Backpedaling is therefore never a substitute for a front brake in good working order.

How does a freewheel bike handle?

On an electric bike without a backpedal brake, the crank rotates freely backward. Before setting off, position the pedal at the 1 o’clock or 2 o’clock position and start with a firm push of the pedal. In stop-and-go traffic, this makes for a much smoother ride. On a low-slung frame heavily loaded with groceries, a good starting position is especially helpful for getting the bike moving smoothly and in a straight line.

Braking is controlled by two levers. This allows you to modulate the front and rear brakes separately and simultaneously. Which system provides the most reliable braking?

Neither one wins automatically. Safety comes from a properly adjusted braking system, good maintenance, and a vehicle you can control even in a split second of panic.

With two powerful hand brakes, you can distribute the braking force very precisely between the front and rear. On wet roads, on hills, and at higher speeds, this is a clear advantage. However, you must use both levers together and gradually. Braking only at the rear out of fear that the front wheel will lock up unnecessarily increases the stopping distance, whether the rear brake is operated by hand or foot.

Backpedaling, on the other hand, can be a valuable secondary control if your grip strength is limited or if this foot movement makes you feel more confident. That doesn’t mean it’s automatically a feature for seniors, though. Some cyclists actually have a harder time getting started, precisely because the crank won’t move backward. A coaster brake is located in the rear hub. You’ll therefore find it most often paired with an internal-gear hub and a compatible mid-drive motor. There are gear hubs designed specifically for e-bikes that feature a backpedal brake, but not all motor and drivetrain combinations support this design. Additionally, a motor in the rear wheel and a separate backpedal brake hub require the same amount of space.

Without a coaster brake, your options expand significantly: gear hubs with separate hand brakes, derailleurs, belt drives, and nearly all sports-oriented platforms. Can you add or remove a backpedal?

In theory, almost anything can be modified on a bike. In practice, this change rarely involves just a quick trip to the shop. For a coaster brake, you'll need a compatible rear hub, a mount for the brake arm, and a compatible drivetrain. To switch to a freewheel, you'll need a standalone rear brake with the corresponding mount and control.

With an electric bike, you also have to factor in the manufacturer’s certifications and motor-related constraints. It’s generally more economical and technically sound to buy the right model from the start. A few hours in the shop rarely turn a poorly chosen braking system into a love affair.

How to Make a Decision During the Trial Period

Try both versions as closely as possible, one after the other. Don’t brake even once in the parking lot; instead, simulate your daily routine: stop, put one foot down, position the pedals to get going, start moving again, and then extend one arm on the next attempt. Then, on a clear and safe stretch of road, check how well you can slow down firmly using both brakes.

For most cyclists, an e-bike with a freewheel and two hand brakes that offer precise control is the most versatile choice. You can position the pedals however you like, you have more options when it comes to the motor, drivetrain, and bike type, and you’re better equipped for both touring and downhill riding.

A back-pedal electric bike is a good choice if you ride mostly on flat terrain and at a leisurely pace, if you’re comfortable using the foot-operated control, and if you value that familiar feeling. Don’t choose the back-pedal system out of habit due to your age, nor the freewheel system out of habit from your athletic background.
