What is a speed bike?
The electric speed bike is also called speed pedelec. The electric speed bike goes up to 45 km/h and therefore allows you to cover greater distances in a given time. Its motor is 350 Watts or even 500 Watts for some, which puts it in the category of mopeds with engines of less than 50cc.
Visually it looks like a classic electrically assisted bicycle with a seat, handlebars, brakes, crankset, derailleur, frame and wheels. Its style is similar to an EAB of the city bike, VTC (mountain bike) or road bikeThe difference is in the power of the bike, which is the same for most of the electric bikes. The difference comes from its power. EABs, electrically assisted bicycles, have a maximum authorised speed of 25 km/h for a 250 Watt motor, the maximum authorised in Europe, including for MTB electric.
Mopeds or electric bikes?
This two-wheeled vehicle is still a type of electrically assisted bicycle because you have to pedal to move forward and activate the electric assistance, unlike a moped, which only requires pedalling to start. Cyclists can therefore adopt it without fear, the physical effort sought in cycling is indeed present.
More power and more responsibility
In the eyes of the law, the speed bike is classified as a moped, which means that it cannot be used in cycle lanes or on contra-flow roads. The seller must provide you with a certificate of conformity attesting that your electric bike is approved. Only those parts listed in the certificate of conformity are allowed as spares. It must be registered, have dedicated insurance and a sticker that will be affixed to the fork or mudguard.
In order to drive, several legal requirements must be met. You must be at least 14 years old and hold an A, B, AM or BSR (road safety certificate) licence.
Wearing a helmet is mandatory when riding a speed bike, unlike other electric bicycles. The helmet must be ECE2205 approved, i.e. a motorbike helmet! However, some manufacturers have developed special speed bike helmets. Gloves are the other compulsory accessory of the outfit, as for the helmet, the gloves will be motorbike gloves as defined by the EN13594:2015 standard.
The purchase of a bike of this type is not trivial. Its high purchase price alone justifies the adoption of one or two locks.
Speed bike, the VAE adapted to urban traffic
Speed bikes are the urban bikes par excellence. With a speed of 45 km/h, a speed bike can easily get through city traffic, and because of its manoeuvrability, it reacts with agility to get out of blockages, traffic jams or when overtaking, unlike a scooter. The speed conferred by the electric assistance is modulable as on an electric city bike and depends only on you. The autonomy of the lithium-ion batteries of EABs in general also allows you to make many trips.
Electric mobility continues to grow, and the sale of bicycles with electric motors is no exception.
