Why does my electric bike sometimes lose power while I'm riding?
An electric bike that shuts down while you're riding is one of the most common problems. But not everyone experiences it the same way: sometimes only the motor stops and the screen stays on, while other times everything goes black and you have to restart the bike.
This difference is your first clue. The engine is rarely the real culprit. The battery, a connection point, a sensor, the temperature, or the software are much more likely to be the cause.

When does your electric bike lose power, and what does that mean?
The exact time the power went out often tells you more than the symptom itself. The table below lists the most common scenarios, the most likely cause, and the first safe step you can take.

Is the power assist turned off, or is the bike completely turned off?
The next time the power cuts out, check your screen first. If the display stays on, the lights are working, and you can still see a battery percentage, only the display has gone dark. This means the power supply is working. The cause is more likely to be related to a sensor, the motor, the thermal protection, or the software. If the screen goes black, the lights turn off, and you have to restart, the power supply has been interrupted. In that case, check the battery, the connection between the battery and the frame, the wiring, or the screen itself.

Let’s start with what’s normal. A standard e-bike legally provides assistance up to about 25 km/h. Around that speed, the motor gradually reduces its assistance; the bike doesn’t brake—it’s simply the extra thrust that disappears. The same thing happens as soon as you stop pedaling and, on bikes equipped with a brake sensor, as soon as you brake. An “ speed pedelec ” falls into a different category and continues to provide assistance beyond that speed. A sudden interruption or a black screen well below 25 km/h has nothing to do with this speed limit.
Every time the bike shuts off, make a note of what happened: speed, battery percentage, assistance level, outside temperature, and any error code displayed. Write down the code exactly as it appears. Battery and Contact Points
If the bike consistently loses power on cobblestones, speed bumps, or a curb, the connection between the battery and the bike is the first thing to check. A battery that isn’t fully snapped into place, play in the battery mount, a worn battery lock, or dirt or corrosion on the contact points: with every jolt, the current can drop out for a fraction of a second. That’s enough to shut down the system. The problem often gets worse the more times the battery has been removed and reinserted.
Another common scenario is the system shutting down when starting out at maximum assist, on an uphill slope, or in a strong headwind—especially when the battery is running low. This is when the voltage drop comes into play. An aging battery can still charge fully but may nevertheless see its voltage drop too low under heavy load. The battery management system kicks in to protect the cells. After a few seconds of rest, the voltage rises slightly and the bike restarts.

A percentage displayed on the screen says nothing about how the battery performs under peak load. Other signs of wear are detailed in our article on the lifespan of an electric bike. Cold weather makes this phenomenon more noticeable. At low temperatures, the available capacity temporarily decreases and internal resistance increases. A battery that’s just barely sufficient in the summer will run out faster in January. Stop using the battery immediately if it is hot, swollen, or damaged, or if it is leaking or emitting a strange odor. This is no longer just a malfunction—it is a safety hazard.
Sensors, Temperature, Humidity, and Software
If the screen stays on and only the motor cuts out, check the sensors. The speed sensor tells the system how fast the wheel is spinning. On many bikes, a magnet is attached to a spoke and a sensor is mounted on the frame. If this magnet moves, or if it ends up too far from the sensor after a gear tire, the speed drops to zero and the assist stops. On newer systems, the magnet is sometimes located in the brake rotor or the valve.
The torque sensor measures the force you apply. If it is dirty or defective, the system thinks you aren’t pedaling. The assist may be intermittent, only respond after a few pedal revolutions, or stop working entirely at a specific pedal position. On a mid-drive motor, this sensor is housed inside the motor and is not designed for at-home repair. View mid-drive bikesTemperature is a second cause. After a long climb with luggage, at maximum assist, or in extreme heat, the motor, controller, and battery can overheat. The system first limits power and then shuts down temporarily. Once they have cooled down, everything works again. If this happens even during normal use, this behavior is unacceptable.
Moisture, on the other hand, takes time to take effect. E-bikes can handle rain, but not all connections remain completely watertight for years. A pressure washer forces water past the seals, and corrosion may not become a problem until a few days later. Damaged cables around the headset or under the motor can also cause disconnections, sometimes only when you turn the handlebars.
In my opinion, software is the most underrated factor. Incompatible versions or a failed update can disrupt communication between the screen, the battery, and the motor. A restart will clear a temporary error, but it won't fix the underlying cause.
What You Can Do Yourself and When to Take It to a Repair Shop
Some checks can be performed safely. Turn the system off and then back on. Reinsert a removable battery and listen to see if it audibly clicks into place. Check that the contact points are clean and dry and that any removable screen is securely attached. Check that the spoke magnet passes directly in front of the sensor, that there are no visible cable damages, and that the brake levers return freely. What not to do: open the battery, motor, controller, or charger; short-circuit contacts; insert metal objects into the battery ports; or use any type of contact spray. An e-bike battery delivers high currents and can catch fire. Do not charge a wet battery or charging port, and use only the original charger.
If the power cuts out again, the bike needs to be taken to a repair shop. A mechanic equipped with diagnostic tools will read the error log, measure the battery capacity, and test the system under load. Be sure to specifically request this load test; a simple capacity measurement will miss the problem of voltage drop entirely. If the issue began after a service, have the wheel, magnet, and connectors checked to ensure they were properly reinstalled. In the meantime, don’t keep riding in the hope that it will fix itself. A power outage in the middle of a busy intersection is dangerous.
I think this also sets the standard for a used e-bike. A bike that cuts out from time to time isn’t just a bit temperamental—it has a defect—and a quick ride around the neighborhood on minimal power assistance with a fully charged battery isn’t a proper test. On a properly refurbished unit, the error log, the battery under load, the battery mount, and the speed sensor have already been evaluated before delivery.
