How to Trade In Your Electric Bike: Online or In-Store?

In practical terms, you have two main options for parting with your old e-bike: selling it directly online to a professional refurbisher, or trading it in in person at a partner bike shop. Both approaches have their advantages, and at Upway, we’ve designed our service to let you effortlessly combine the best of both worlds.

Sell directly to Upway online (in 5 minutes)

Want to get there fast and don't feel like lugging your bike around? Our online store is perfect for you. The process is designed to make your life as easy as possible:

  1. Online Estimate: In just 5 minutes, you’ll answer a few specific questions about the brand, model, year, and current condition of your electric bike.
  2. No-obligation offer: Our experts will analyze your responses and send you a firm, market-based offer within 48 hours.
  3. Free pickup or drop-off: Will you take us up on this offer? Our shipping partner, MyHomeDelivery, will pick up your bike for free at your home, whether it’s packaged or not (shipping without a box costs €20; shipping with packaging remains free). 4. Fast payment: After a quick inspection at our refurbishment center, your money will be securely transferred to your account within 3 to 5 business days.
  5. A trade-in bonus: Are you selling your bike to Upway and then buying one of our refurbished e-bikes? You’ll receive a €100 discount on your next purchase.

Upway 's network of partner stores: trade-ins at your local bike shop

Would you prefer expert advice from a local specialist, to try out several models, and ride away on your new bike right away? Our network of more than 230 partner stores in Belgium and the Netherlands is perfect for you.

Upway works closely with well-known brands such as Bike Republic (more than 35 brick-and-mortar stores in Belgium), Fietsen De Geus (the well-known specialist in the Antwerp region), and the MOEVS showrooms.

In practical terms, how does it work?

  1. Take your old e-bike (including the charger, battery, and tools) to a participating store.
  2. The in-store team inspects your bike and usesUpway 's advanced estimation tool to calculate an exact trade-in offer on the spot.
  3. Do you accept the offer? The trade-in value is deducted directly from the price of your new e-bike at this store. So you’ll walk out with a nice discount right away! Some partners, such as Bike Republic, provide the value in the form of a gift card valid for one year toward bikes, accessories, or maintenance.

Which electric bikes are eligible for trade-in?

Whether you ride a sporty e-MTB , a speedy speed pedelec , a city bike, or an electric cargo bike, virtually all e-bikes can, in principle, be traded in through our network. To ensure quality for the future owner, a few minimum criteria apply:

  • Year & Condition: The bike was purchased after 2014; it is in good overall condition and has no structural damage (cracked frame, damaged fork).
  • Legal compliance: The bicycle must be unrestricted and usable within the current legal framework, with no error messages when switching between assistance modes.
  • Complete components: The original battery, its charger, and at least one key (for the battery or frame lock) must be included.

Why Your Personal E-Bike Is Valuable at Upway

Did you know that some major platforms for refurbished e-bikes, such as Rebike, deliberately do not buy any bikes from private individuals in order to keep their logistics simple? They focus exclusively on returns from business- leasing .

At Upway, we do things differently. We firmly believe that the transition to sustainable mobility will only truly accelerate if individual cyclists, too, have the opportunity to trade in their e-bikes quickly, fairly, and easily. We view your old bike as a valuable raw material, which we refurbish with care and expertise to give it a second life—much like new —complete with a warranty.

Our Expert Tips for Maximizing Your Trade-In Value

As electric bike experts, we see hundreds of bikes come through our doors every day. Many owners unwittingly leave money on the table when trading in their bikes. Here are our practical tips to help you get the most out of your trade-in offer.

1. Provide an official battery diagnostic report

The battery is the most valuable component of an electric bike. While our calculation tools are based on average degradation based on age and mileage, tangible proof of the battery’s excellent State of Health (SoH) can help you secure the best deal. Ask your bike shop for a battery diagnosis (such as a Bosch capacity test) before trading in your bike. A report showing a remaining capacity of more than 85% or 90% of the original capacity significantly increases the bike’s value and the offer you receive. To learn more about how motors work, check out our guide The E-Bike Motor Explained.

2. Update the firmware for the motor and the display

Electric bike manufacturers regularly release software updates that improve motor efficiency and battery management. Make sure your electric bike has the latest firmware version: this prevents “false” error messages from appearing during our inspection, which would unnecessarily lower the estimated value. Curious about your model’s top speed? Our article "How Fast Can an E-Bike Go?" explains everything you need to know about legal and technical limitations.

3. Clean your bike to get it ready for sale

A bike covered in mud subconsciously gives the impression that it hasn't been properly maintained. Give your e-bike a thorough cleaning with a mild bike shampoo (never use a pressure washer!). Pay special attention to the sensors: if they’re clogged with dirt, the pedal assist may not work properly during our expert’s test ride, which could lower the offer.

4. Gather the complete maintenance history

An electric bike that comes with a completed maintenance log or proof of regular servicing retains its value better. This shows that any wear and tear and updates were addressed in a timely manner. Have the original purchase invoice and maintenance receipts ready: this immediately builds confidence among our experts, encouraging them to offer the highest possible price.

The opinion ofUpway

At Upway, we believe that trading in an electric bike shouldn’t be limited to corporate fleets or professionals. By opening our trade-in network to individual consumers—both online and in-store—we aim to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility that’s accessible to everyone, without the usual hassles of selling to other individuals.

Frequently asked questions

Which brands of electric bikes can I trade in?

Upway includes the vast majority of well-known e-bike brands, such as Gazelle, Riese & Müller, Cube, Tenways, and Trek. If a specific brand is temporarily not listed in our online estimate tool (due to inventory fluctuations), you can always contact our support team or visit one of our partner stores for a manual evaluation.

Do I have to pack my bike myself if I'm selling it online at Upway ?

No, it's not required! Our shipping partner, MyHomeDelivery, can pick up your electric bike directly from your home—no need to pack it in a box. This "no-box" option costs €20. Would you prefer the free option? All you have to do is pack the bike yourself in a box, which you can often get for free at a local bike shop.

How do you determine the exact trade-in value of my electric bike?

Our estimate is based on a smart algorithm combined with the expertise of our technicians. We take into account objective factors such as the make, the original purchase price, the model year, and the mileage. Current market demand, seasonality, and estimated reconditioning costs are also factored in.

Can I receive the value of my bike in cash at a participating store?

No, our trade-in program with our partner stores is specifically designed to facilitate a direct transition to a new bike. The estimated value of your old bike is either deducted directly from the purchase price of the new bike at that store or issued as a store credit. Would you prefer to receive the amount via bank transfer? If so, choose our direct online sales option at Upway.

What happens to my old e-bike after the trade-in?

Your bike is starting a new, sustainable life! The bikes we take in are brought to our refurbishment center, where they undergo a comprehensive process: our mechanics inspect the bike’s critical components, perform electronic diagnostics on the battery and motor, replace worn parts, and update the software. Only once the e-bike is back in perfect working order do we list it on our platform, with a 1-year warranty. To learn more, visit our Help Center dedicated to selling your bike.
