Canceling Your E-Bike Insurance After the Sale: A Step-by-Step Guide

That’s it—you’ve taken the plunge: your e-bike is sold! Maybe because you want to upgrade to a high-end model refurbished at Upway, or simply because you’re riding less than you used to. Whatever the reason, selling your e-bike is always a little moment of satisfaction. But between handing over the bike and receiving the payment in your account, there’s one administrative formality you mustn’t forget: canceling or adjusting your e-bike insurance.

If you don’t, you’ll keep paying for a risk that no longer applies to you. And that’s money down the drain. The good news is that canceling your bike insurance after selling your bike is much easier than you might think, both in Belgium and the Netherlands. In this guide, I’ll explain exactly how to do it, what the law says, and how to get a portion of your premium back.

Canceling Your E-Bike Insurance After Selling Your E-Bike

Key points to remember

  • Immediate cancellation after the sale: Legally speaking, the sale of your e-bike constitutes the “cessation of risk.” With almost all insurers, you can therefore cancel the policy immediately or with very short notice.
  • Pro-rated premium refund: Have you already paid the annual premium? The insurer will refund the portion corresponding to the remaining months of the policy.
  • Relaxed rules in Belgium: As of October 1, 2024, you can cancel at any time after the first year, with two months' notice, and do so entirely online.

Why cancel your e-bike insurance after selling your bike?

Electric bike insurance protects your e-bike against theft, property damage, and breakdowns on the road. Want to know exactly what this type of policy covers? Check out our guide on what electric bike insurance covers (and doesn’t cover). When the bike changes hands, the coverage isn’t automatically transferred—the policy remains in your name. In other words, you’re still responsible for paying the premium.

From a legal standpoint, the sale results in what insurers call the “disappearance of risk” (or termination of the insured risk). Since the bicycle is no longer in your possession, the insurer no longer bears any risk of theft or property damage on your part. This entitles you to terminate the contract immediately.

Canceling Your Bike Insurance in Belgium: The Rules

In Belgium, the laws governing the termination of insurance contracts have been significantly modernized in recent years. The Insurance Act (formerly the Act on Land Insurance Contracts) serves as the basis for these laws. Still unsure about whether to insure your next bike? Our article , “Should You Insure Your Electric Bike?” provides an overview of the actual requirements.

The Right Arising from the Elimination of Risk

When you sell your e-bike, Belgian law allows you to terminate the contract early due to the cessation of risk. The termination generally takes effect as soon as your request is processed, or is subject to a shortened notice period of no more than one month. This is an exception to standard contracts, which normally provide for a minimum term of one year followed by tacit renewal.

What has changed since October 1, 2024?

If your policy has been in effect for some time and you wish to cancel it for another reason (or if you’re taking advantage of a sale to switch insurers), you can benefit from the new rules that took effect on October 1, 2024, in Belgium:

  • A 2-month notice period: The standard notice period has been reduced from three months to two months.
  • Cancellation at any time after the first year: If your policy has been in effect for at least one year, you no longer have to wait until the annual renewal date. You can cancel at any time, provided you give two months’ notice.
  • Digital cancellation is valid: where you used to have to send a registered letter, you can now cancel online using an electronic signature or a digital form on the insurer’s website. It’s much faster—and, best of all, free.

Hanna's Advice

Do you still have an active policy with ENRA in Belgium? As of January 1, 2026, ENRA is no longer offering new insurance policies on the Belgian market. Your existing policy remains valid, but if you sell your bike, you can easily cancel it using their online cancellation form. ENRA will then refund any excess premium you’ve paid.

What about the Netherlands? The rules at a glance

If your contract was entered into in the Netherlands, the rules are similar and just as favorable to the consumer.

Immediate termination following the transfer of ownership

As soon as the bike is sold, you can cancel the policy as of the date of sale. As in Belgium, the legal basis for this is the elimination of the insured risk. Therefore, you do not need to take into account either the remaining term of the policy or any notice period. The insurer terminates the policy as of the day the e-bike is officially no longer yours.

The "Wet van Dam"

For termination without a sale, the Netherlands applies the law known as the “Wet van Dam.” It provides that after the initial contract period (usually one year), you may terminate the contract at any time with up to one month’s notice.

Just like in Belgium, you are entitled to a prorated refund. Did you pay the annual premium in January and sell the bike in June? You’ll receive a refund for the remaining months (July through December) directly into your bank account.

Action Plan: How to Properly Terminate a Contract in 3 Steps

To ensure that the cancellation goes smoothly and that you get your money back quickly, follow these three steps.

Step 1: Gather the necessary information

Have the following information on hand before contacting your insurer or filling out a form:

  • Your full name and address.
  • Your bicycle insurance policy number.
  • The brand, model, and frame number of the bicycle sold.
  • The exact date of the sale (which serves as the contract's end date).
  • Your IBAN account number for the premium refund.

Step 2: Choose your cancellation method

  • Online (recommended): Many insurers and brokers offer a portal or digital form that processes the cancellation directly. It’s quick, and you’ll receive an acknowledgment of receipt right away.
  • Registered mail: Even though digital delivery is now legally valid, some people still prefer registered mail. With the tracking number, you have solid legal proof of both mailing and receipt.

Step 3: Verify the refund and cancel the direct debit

Once the cancellation has been confirmed, check to make sure the prorated refund has been credited to your account. Did you pay by direct debit? Don’t forget to cancel it in your banking app to avoid any unwanted charges in the future.

Upway 's Expertise: Should You Sell or Transfer Your Insurance Policy?

As e-bike specialists at refurbished, we often get this question at Upway : “Can I just transfer my insurance to the buyer, or carry it over to my new bike?” This is a tip you won’t find everywhere, and it can save you a lot of paperwork.

Option 1: The buyer takes over your contract

Some insurers allow for a policy transfer. The current policy, linked to the bike’s frame number, is then transferred to the new owner. This can be a real selling point: the buyer is covered against theft and damage from the very first second, without having to take out a new policy right away. In practice, you both sign a transfer form to be sent back to the insurer. Please note: Not all insurers offer this option, so always check the terms and conditions beforehand. Still unsure about which sales channel to choose? Our comparison of the best options for selling your electric bike covers everything.

Option 2: Transfer the insurance to your new bike Upway

Are you buying a new refurbished electric bike from Upway after selling your old one? There’s a good chance you can simply transfer your existing policy to your new bike. You don’t need to cancel anything—just ask the insurer to update the policy. All you need to do is provide the purchase invoice and the new frame number. Since the value of the new bike may be different, the premium will be recalculated.

All of our electric bikes undergo a rigorous inspection by professional mechanics and come with a 1-year warranty. Since Upway bikes are technically in perfect condition, virtually all major insurers accept them without issue. This is often more cost-effective and faster than purchasing a comprehensive policy new. Combine this with a good lock designed for your e-bike, and you’ve already met most of the policy requirements.

An important exception in Belgium

Were you insured with ENRA in Belgium? Since ENRA has not been issuing new policies in the Belgian market since 2026, it is unfortunately no longer possible to transfer your insurance to another bike. In this case, you should cancel the policy, request a refund of your premium, and then purchase new insurance for your bike Upway from another provider. Frequently asked questions

1. Can I cancel my insurance immediately after selling the bike?

Yes, absolutely. Insurers legally classify the sale of your bike as a “cessation of risk.” You can therefore cancel the policy as of the date of sale, without being bound by a notice period or the remaining term of the contract.

2. Will I get a refund for the premium I paid in advance?

Yes. If you pay your premium annually, canceling your policy due to a sale entitles you to a pro-rata refund. You’ll receive a refund for the months during which you no longer own the bike. Make sure the insurer has your IBAN.

3. Is registered mail required?

No. In the Netherlands, this hasn't been necessary for quite some time, and Belgium relaxed the rule on October 1, 2024. You can now cancel your contract online in a fully valid manner—for example, through a web form or an email with an electronic signature. This saves time and postage costs.

4. Can I transfer my contract to my new Upway  bike?

In most cases, yes. The majority of insurers are willing to adjust your existing policy to cover your new e-bike. All you need to do is provide the new frame number and the purchase details. Please note: With a Belgian ENRA policy, this is no longer possible due to ENRA’s withdrawal from the Belgian market in 2026.

5. What information does the insurer require?

To process your request quickly, the insurer needs your name and address, your policy number, the type of insurance, and the date of sale. Be sure to include your signature (or electronic signature) and provide your account number for the refund.
